Named by some as one of Birdy's most emotive album to date, the "Portraits" album release features 4 songs produced and co-written by King Ed - one of which being the previously-shared track "Paradise Calling". The other 3 tracks featuring King Ed in the credits are "Ruins I", "Ruins II" and "Tears Don't Fall". Despite breaking through at the young age of 15, Birdy (now 27) is still yet to abandon her 'trademark piano ballads' in her new album, and has also managed to merge her distinct style with a more '80s flavoured pop' for "Portraits".

On opener Paradise Calling, she recreates the decade’s jerky, bombastic synthpop, yet her references from then on are less route one. Ruins I pairs stormy percussion with a lugubrious topline that evokes Echo and the Bunnymen.
